10 Essential Guidelines for your Kitchen Project – Renovate VIP

Redesigning your kitchen doesn’t have to be a daunting task. If you plan carefully and follow the necessary steps, your kitchen project will be a stress-free and fun experience.

Here are 10 Essential Guidelines for your Kitchen Project.

Don’t Forget the Work Triangle

For efficiency, you may want to utilize the work triangle. This triangle includes the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove. This space should measure 26 inches or less with no single side longer than 9 inches, or less than 4 inches.

Opt for the Properly Sized Cabinets

When creating your new kitchen, it is essential to install properly sized cabinets. In kitchens smaller than 150 square feet, opt for at least 13 inches of base cabinets, 12 inches of wall cabinets, and 11 inches of counter top. In kitchens which are larger, go with at least 16 inches of base cabinets, 15 1/2 inches of wall cabinets, and 16 1/2 inches of counter top.

Convenience is Everything

Designing a new kitchen means planning for convenience. For the sake of convenience, plan work aisles to be at least 42 inches wide for one cook, and at least 48 inches wide in multi-cook kitchens.

Everything and the Kitchen Sink

To have your kitchen function at its best, it’s important to think about counter and sink space. Specify a minimum of 24 inches of counter space on one side of the sink and at least 18 inches on the other.

Provide a Landing Area

Landing areas are essential, especially when it comes to unloading groceries. To create the most accessible landing, allow at least 15 inches of counter space on the handle side of a standard refrigerator; on both sides if it’s a side-by-side model. You also need to include a landing area directly across from the refrigerator, but no more than 48 inches away.

Keeping Things Clean

A messy kitchen can be a source of stress. For cleanup ease, install the dishwasher within 36 inches of one edge of the sink and allow for at least 21 inches of standing room next to it.

Space for the Microwave and Oven

When installing a microwave and oven, you’ll want to make some space. For microwaves and ovens, provide at least 15 inches of counter space nearby, and at least 16 inches deep.

Optimum Clearance

The next step in your kitchen project is to ensure there is proper clearance. For optimum clearance, no entry, appliance, or cabinet doors should interfere with another.

Staying Comfortable

Comfort is always key in home design. For comfort and to help avoid repetitive-motion injury, plan for work counters of different heights; between 28 and 36 inches off the floor (easier for chopping and seated-use access), and between 36 and 46 inches for general tasks (higher counters accommodate taller cooks).

Installing a Cabinet Unit

Finally, it is important to take the necessary steps to install a cabinet unit. To install a cabinet unit above the cook top, make sure the clearance is at least 24 inches for a fireproof surface, and 30 inches for an unprotected surface.

Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Knowing the recommended measurements to use when planning the project can make all the difference in the final outcome.
